There is probably not an exact day as to when ‘this’ all started, but today we are marking the 25th birthday of Planit. Over the years we’ve been called a few variations on the theme — Planit EDC and latterly Planit IE. Soon, we will be just Planit.
What began as three people who barely knew each other, setting up shop together in a Frodsham attic office, has grown from our home in Altrincham, Greater Manchester, to five studios across the country and a team getting close on 100.
‘Plan for the life of an Oak tree’ is something we say often to describe our projects, but it’s probably true of the practice we are today. From those modest beginnings, we’ve grown slowly but sustainably, building resilience through our team, our work, and our clients.
Many of those have been working alongside us for decades, some for much of the 25 years. Likewise, our team, most of our senior leadership team, have topped the decade and some two.
That organic, sustainable growth has enabled us to branch out beyond our northwest origins, down to London and across the Pennines to Leeds, where our newest studio is taking root.
Over the last three years we have become a certified B Corp and Employee Owned, at the same time building a new, experimental studio in the Gloucestershire countryside — marking our commitment to adopt regenerative practices and become a Net Positive business.
Leading a business is learning to look around corners and over hills. As founders, we are excited by the potential of our teams and the work that lies ahead for Planit IE. We know Planit will enjoy a successful and purposeful future because we have invested wisely — in the best people, clients, and projects. Industry risks have been mitigated through diversifying our offer and being selective about where we offer our craft. But, perhaps the most significant threat we've prepared for is the one that will have the broadest, most resounding, and most profound societal impact — that of playing our part in saving the world.
There are those things in our future that we can see, and there are those that nobody can see clearly yet. The world outside of Planit IE is changing quickly. All we can do is ally ourselves with people determined to land on the right side of history; this is why we are a B Corp.
We all now realise what being a B Corp means to us, professionally and personally. It is all-encompassing for our projects; our travel arrangements, where and what we eat, how we treat each other, and how we engage with the planet around us and the challenges that lie ahead.
Now Planit has reached its quarter century and become Employee Owned, the founders have no plans to walk away. We understand our responsibilities differently now — to our clients, our families, each other, the communities we work in, and the planet.
We strongly believe that our best work lies ahead of us, not behind. Whilst the studio has been prolific to this point, those projects have been merely preparation, for the challenges ahead.
We are delighted to be celebrating our 25th birthday by launching our first book and our podcast – both entitled ‘The Start of Something’. The title reflects the way we look at our work and the part we can play in fixing the world around us.
We want to introduce a more generous, gentle language to the craft of change and the movement towards regenerative practice. We will always be ‘starters’ despite our projects taking years or decades to realise and mature.
The book and our podcast series speak to everyone interested in positive change, generous leadership and, through business, the drive to leave the world better than we found it.
This point marks a time to celebrate — what we’ve learnt, our successes, our failures, and to recognise those we’ve met and left their mark along the way.
